A family tennis tradition

Tennis was somewhat of a family tradition on the paternal side of my family. It was an active, social activity popular in Sydney’s Northern Suburbs. My grandparents met through their local tennis club, and all four of their parents also played. They competed in regional tennis association competitions, too.

I have quite a few tennis photos from the 1920s and 30s, from my Nan’s collection, and from an album that belonged to my great-grandaunt. I’ve enjoyed browsing them and identifying relatives.

Lawn tennis in Australia

Lawn tennis arrived in Australia soon after its 1873 invention by Major Walter Clopton Wingfield. Private tennis courts and matches were popular, clubs were quickly organised, and interstate competitions began in the 1880s.

The Sydney Lawn Tennis Club was established in 1885, and the Lawn Tennis Association of Victoria in 1892. The Lawn Tennis Association of Australasia began in 1904, leading to a national championship competition and participation in the Davis Cup.
